The Pursuit of Equitable & Student-centered Deep Mathematical Discourse
In my practice as an educator, I have seen the tremendous impact that facilitative mathematics teaching and deep mathematical discourse has on student learning, conceptual understanding, and overall development as critical thinkers and problemsolvers. The role of the teacher is crucial in orchestrating deep mathematical discourse that engages and guides students toward a learning goal. When a teacher takes the role as a facilitator of learning, it is essential that the educator has a deep understanding of content in order to plan worthwhile tasks, strategically guide student inquiry to surface learning outcomes and address misconceptions that arise.
