We believe that all children deserve a space where they can bring their full selves and develop as curious, critical, and creative human beings. We also believe that children deserve to see the cultural richness of their own communities reflected in their teachers. Public school classrooms have enormous potential to live into these goals— and the San Diego Teacher Residency is part of the movement to make that transformation happen, one new teacher at a time.

SDTR provides a hands-on approach to teacher preparation with an emphasis on learning to educate for justice and deeper learning in a project-based learning environment. In Year 1, SDTR residents take coursework at the High Tech High Graduate School of Education and participate in a year-long residency at a High Tech High school in San Diego county. Year 1 culminates with residents earning their CA preliminary teaching credential.

In Year 2, our students work as employed teachers while returning one night per week to the HTH GSE for continued coursework. Students use tools from lesson study and continuous improvement to guide an inquiry project connected to a dilemma of practice in their classrooms. Year 2 culminates in a Master’s of Education in Teaching & Learning degree.
