Join us as we discover the routines and strategies one educator practiced to engage students in a transformative learning experience. We are thrilled to welcome Paola Capo-Garcia, 12th Grade English Literature and Composition Educator at HTHMA. She will unpack the project Politics of the Personal. This is a highly interactive workshop that balances visual storytelling with discussions and practice. Walk away with new or revised instructional practices aimed at engaging the community of learners in meaningful learning experiences.
Under the banner of POLITICS OF THE PERSONAL, seniors were tasked with writing research essays about political topics that personally impacted them. In the final step, students remixed their research into political piñatas with the help of local artist Diana Benavídez, whose work explores the political possibilities of the piñata tradition. As a bonus, students stuffed their piñatas with their original poetry to create a bridge between the course’s two main modes of writing. The result was a room full of highly personal and highly political piñatas waiting to be smashed.
This Unpacking will focus on core content, community partners, and reflection as PBL essential practices.
