GSE Institutes immerse participants in the High Tech High K–12 schools and wall-to-wall adult learning environment created by an embedded approach to graduate education. Like HTH schools, adult learning at the GSE is learner-focused and grounded in equity.  Institutes are facilitated using teaching practices and structures that support participants in designing and implementing equitable learning experiences in their own context.

Institutes are facilitated by K-12 teachers, students and GSE faculty. Participants visit HTH classes to observe project-based learning and deeper learning in action, and are mentored by HTH teachers throughout their experience on campus. Institutes feature interactive workshops, structured team time for participants to plan how they will put to practice new ideas at their school sites, and opportunities to engage with students and staff.

Upcoming Professional Learning Institutes at the HTH GSE

Winter Institute: Experiences for Transformational Learning

Wednesday, Jan 29 through Thursday, Jan 30, 2020

At the GSE Winter Institute, take on the roles of learner, doer, maker, designer, and facilitator. You will collaborate in a group to experience PBL and focus on equitable teaching practices. Each participant dives deeply into one selected project with an HTH teacher and learns from other participants engaged in different, simultaneous PBL experiences. Together, we will unpack teaching practices that promote equitable access to teaching and learning. Using elements of PBL design, participants will co-create strategies and tools that develop our capacity to disrupt educational inequities.

All participants will leave with PBL plans and practices, and a living archive of equitable teaching practices to design and facilitate transformation at their schools.

Spring Institute: Innovation & Equity in Assessment

Wednesday, June 3 through Thursday, June 4, 2020

Innovation & Equity in Assessment is themed around the use of presentations, exhibitions, curation, critique, reflection and the celebration of student work as a vehicle for facilitating student learning. Workshop topics include the nuts and bolts of student presentations of learning, meaningful exhibitions of student work, collaborative assessment of student work, and the ability to create projects with an audience in mind. Participants will work with HTH teachers and students to understand how the curation and critique of student work impact the student and teacher experience, influences—or even drives—project design, and plays a primary role in school culture and student learning.

Improvement Institute:
Building a Culture of Continuous Improvement for Equity

Thursday, November 7 through Friday, November 8, 2019

How might we integrate and spread deeper learning and PBL practices in our schools?

How can schools “get better at getting better” in a way that is engaging, sustainable and equity-focused? In this highly interactive two-day institute, participants will experience tools and strategies for supporting improvement and innovation efforts within existing professional development structures to develop and sustain a culture of continuous improvement. Together, we will explore methods for surfacing and understanding key problems of practice, developing a clear theory of action, engaging in quick iterative cycles to guide on-going learning, and nurturing network structures that facilitate sharing and accelerate the spread of good ideas. School/district leader and teacher teams are encouraged to attend and will leave with a concrete plan for supporting improvement work in their own contexts. This workshop is offered by the HTH GSE’s Center for Research on Equity and Innovation.
