Ruth Smith

Ruth is an Improvement Facilitator at High Tech High Graduate School of Education for the National Coalition for Improvement in Education. She facilitates the CARE Network, supporting schools to increase the number of students graduating high school and entering college. She also works with the California Math Curriculum and Instruction Network to help districts implement the new California Math Framework for sustainable math instructional improvement and enhanced student learning. Additionally, Ruth facilitates the RAISE Network, uniting educators, families, and communities to design innovative solutions to reduce chronic absenteeism statewide.

With over 15 years of experience in education, Ruth holds a Master’s in Education with an emphasis in Mathematics from the University of California, San Diego. Her mission is to create equitable math practices and foster student agency. Since joining the Mathematical Agency Improvement Community in 2016, she has focused on lesson studies and short inquiry cycles to challenge the belief that “I’m not a math person.” Ruth applies these insights to support peers and build students’ mathematical identity, fostering confidence and success in the subject.
