Teaching Apprenticeship Program
The GSE Teaching Apprenticeship program provides an embedded, hands-on approach to teacher preparation. In Year One, candidates participate in an immersive student teaching experience in one of the 16 High Tech High (HTH) clinical sites, earning their California Preliminary Credential by the end of the academic year. In Year Two, candidates build on this foundation, earning an M.Ed. in Teaching & Learning while working as teachers of record in local schools. Throughout the program, candidates have extensive opportunities to practice and reflect on their teaching through personalized projects which integrate theory and practice.
HTH clinical sites are guided by four design principles ~ equity, personalization, authentic work and collaborative design ~ and provide an innovative and disruptive context for candidates to reimagine what is possible for K-12 education. Candidates learn how to design equitable learning environments which provide access and challenge to all learners through deeper learning and project-based pedagogies. For their Master’s Project, candidates use tools from design thinking and improvement science to design and implement an inquiry project which is connected to a problem of practice in their classroom.
Two-year, face-to-face program
- Full-time model
- 4 days / week apprenticeship placement in one of the 14 HTH schools
- Classes meet one evening plus one full day per week
- Culminates in a California Multiple Subject or Single Subject Preliminary Teaching Credential
- Part-time model allows for candidates to complete their Master’s degree while teaching part- or full-time
- Classes meet for three hours 1x/week
- Culminates in an M.Ed. in Teaching & Learning

- Instructional Design (D1): Design approaches to learning that emphasize personalization, connect to the world beyond school, and offer access and challenge to all learners.
- Authentic Assessment (D2): Design reflective, dialogical approaches to assessment both formative and summative, to assess student learning and guide instruction.
- Differentiation (D3): Design learning experiences that honor student voice and choice and are responsive to cultural, linguistic and neurodiversity in the classroom.
