Hello everyone, my name is Jorge Cabrera and I have been teaching for eleven years. My education journey began when I first moved from Mexico to the U.S. at the age of 13. I was fortunate to have had teachers who were not only passionate about teaching, but who encouraged, inspired and pushed me to find what I was passionate about. My passion led me straight back into the classroom, pushing and encouraging all students to see the beauty in numbers and themselves as scholars. I am a first generation graduate, with my bachelor’s degree in math education from Long Beach State and my masters in school leadership from High Tech High GSE. A main goal I have as a teacher is to reach students who were like me; individuals struggling with their culture and/or identity and looking for a “home” to belong too. I feel math is not only the gateway for these students, but is the great equalizer. Leveling the academic playing field not only for all students, but especially for our BIPOC students. Lastly, teaching has allowed me to make meaningful and memorable connections and relationships with those who I have encountered along the way.
