Karen is originally from Sacramento, California and grew up with both of her parents being teachers (in fact, her mother taught third grade for over 30 years!)
When Karen went to college, she majored in political science and minored in education at UC San Diego. It was here that she had invaluable opportunities to meet life long friends, expand her mind and challenge herself socially and academically. She worked at a restaurant throughout college, mentored undergrads and international students needing help with their writing and had the opportunity to work in Peru and Alabama through a college organization.
From there, she decided to stay at UC San Diego and get her elementary teaching credential and her masters degree (with a special emphasis in math instruction) After her credential program, she had the opportunity to help open up HTe in Point Loma as a third grade teacher. She taught third grade for 4 years and now teaches 5th grade!
This is her sixth year teaching and fourth year up here at High Tech Elementary North County. Karen believes in the power of students being agents in his/her own learning and empowering kids to see themselves in a dynamic way. She also believes in the power of laughter, being unequivocally yourself, and being extremely goofy/weird/a combo of all of the above.
In her free time she loves: traveling, playing tennis, goal-setting with her passion planner, reading books for leisure, baking, reflecting, deep conversations, good food with good company, watching jeopardy, music, everything. Life is grand!
