California Math Curriculum & Instruction Network
CORE Districts and the Center for Equity and Innovation at the High Tech High Graduate School of Education are launching the California Math Curriculum & Instruction Network in October 2023. The goal of the network is to support district and school teams to unpack the new California Math Framework and get systems in place for long-term math instructional improvement and increased student learning.
About
The new California Math Framework approved by the State Board of Education in July, 2023 signifies a transformative shift in California’s recommended approach to mathematics instruction. The framework prioritizes inquiry-based instruction and opportunities for real world problem solving, which will present a significant learning curve for many educators. Districts will need a clear vision for math teaching and learning to guide the adoption of high quality curricular materials and to design aligned plans, systems, and structures to support the professional development of educators at all levels.
Over the next two years the CMCIN will support teams composed of district and school personnel to:
- Unpack the new California Math Framework and its implications for teaching, learning and professional development
- Establish a clear and compelling district-wide vision for math instruction and learning that is grounded in research and student-centered practices
- Analyze high quality curriculum options that align with the new framework to guide curriculum adoption decisions and refine curriculum documents to guide classroom instruction
- Create effective professional development plans in line with research-based best practices to support the deepening/transition to more student-centered instruction
Design measurement systems to support educators and districts to implement changes and track progress through a practical approach to continuous improvement
Key Network Dates & Activities
Network Information Sessions (virtual)
Tuesday, September 26th, 9:00-11:00 am PT,
OR Wednesday, October 4th, 1:00-3:00 pm PT
Network Activities for 2023-24 (in person in San Diego unless otherwise noted)
Network Launch: Understanding the Framework
October 30th, 2023, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm PT
October 31st, 2023, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
District teams will be introduced to the new California Mathematics Framework and engage in a deep dive into the instructional shifts and principles it introduces. During this convening teams will also create a plan to explore the current status of math teaching and learning in their district.
Action Period #1: Crafting the Vision
(Teams work independently with regular virtual check in support from hub)
November 1st, 2023 – January 25th, 2024
Teams complete an analysis of existing math professional development structures and systems and their relative effectiveness and craft a preliminary vision for math teaching and learning in their district.
Convening #2: Designing Effective Professional Development
January 26th, 2024, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Teams finalize district vision for math teaching and learning, learn best practices for effective professional development, and explore measurement systems that support continuous improvement to guide implementation and assess progress on key student learning goals.
Action Period #2: Refining Effective Professional Development Plans
(Teams work independently with regular virtual check in support from hub)
January 27th – May 22nd, 2024
Districts will work on developing their high-level professional development plans and engaging in iterative design and feedback loops with stakeholders in their own contexts.
“Go and See” Opportunity: Learning From District Successes
(location TBD)
March – April 2024
An optional opportunity for teams to visit other districts that have found success in vision alignment, effective professional development structures, and/or student outcomes.
Convening #3: High Quality Curriculum Review
May 23rd, 2024, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Teams finalize visions, professional development plans, and explore high quality curriculum options. Teams will also have the opportunity to hear from districts who have already adopted high quality curricula of interest.
Network Goals for Year Two
The focus of the second year will be for teams to refine their plans and put them into action. Through another round of in-person convenings and action periods, including additional ‘go and see’ opportunities, teams will establish processes and procedures for selecting/adopting new curriculum (if not completed in year one), update curriculum documents to integrate framework recommendations and new curriculum resources as well as finalize and/or initiate district professional development plans. Additionally, we’ll support districts to establish systems to understand the impact of their new math visions, curriculum use, instructional improvement, and effectiveness of professional development plans.
Who is Eligible to Join?
This grant funded opportunity is open to California district and school based teams. To maximize learning across the network, we are prioritizing representation from diverse districts and encourage teams from both urban and rural communities, as well as from regions spanning northern, central, and southern California, to apply,
The ideal team consists of: District executive leader, data leader, math content leader, Principal & math teacher/TOSA teams (up to three grade level spans). Note: Teams must include at least one school admin and teacher representative from the district.
