California
Math Network

CORE Districts and the Center for Equity and Innovation at the High Tech High Graduate School of Education are launching the California Math Curriculum & Instruction Network in October 2023. The goal of the network is to support district and school teams to unpack the new California Math Framework and get systems in place for long-term math instructional improvement and increased student learning.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA MATH NETWORK

Fostering Inquiry-Driven, Real-World Math Learning Across California

Approved by the State Board of Education in July 2023, the new California Math Framework emphasizes inquiry-based instruction and real-world problem-solving. This shift challenges educators to define a clear vision for math instruction, adopt quality curricula, and build systems supporting professional growth.

Over the next two years, CMCIN will guide district and school teams to:

Unpack the new California Math Framework and its implications for teaching, learning and professional development

Establish a clear and compelling district-wide vision for math instruction and learning that is grounded in research and student-centered practices

Analyze high quality curriculum options that align with the new framework to guide curriculum adoption decisions and refine curriculum documents to guide classroom instruction

Create effective professional development plans in line with research-based best practices to support the deepening/transition to more student-centered instruction

Design measurement systems to support educators and districts to implement changes and track progress through a practical approach to continuous improvement

Network Goals for Year Two

The focus of the second year will be for teams to refine their plans and put them into action.

Curriculum Adoption and Integration

Through additional in-person convenings, action periods, and “go and see” opportunities, teams will establish curriculum adoption processes, update curriculum documents to align with framework recommendations, and finalize or initiate district professional development plans.

Impact Measurement and Systems for Improvement

We will support districts in establishing systems to assess the impact of their new math visions, curriculum adoption, instructional improvement, and the effectiveness of professional development plans.
