What is Continuous Improvement?

Continuous improvement is a deeply optimistic and collaborative process of using bold ideas and sustainable steps to drive real change in education. Together, we improvers examine root causes, test smarter solutions, and scale up what succeeds – creating better outcomes for every student.

Why does a great idea for improving education feel so exciting? Because we see how it can work for our students – and for so many students.

We all know what it’s like to feel passionate and inspired about tackling big, systemic problems for students – and we know what it’s like to feel discouraged, too. We don’t need to work harder. We need an approach that works better. Continuous improvement gives us a way to collaborate on the great ideas that can transform education for all of us. Here’s a glimpse of how it works:

We turn inward – to the heart of the conditions where our students learn and we work. To drive deep change, our improvement plans have to make deep sense for the young people we serve. By understanding the root causes of problems, we can develop ideas that are impactful and actionable.

We look outward – to the ways improvers like us have driven results for students like ours. Their results can help us build smarter plans and goals. And their impact can help us stay inspired – because we know we’re not starting from scratch. We’re building on the progress they’ve made for students in schools and districts like ours.

We test out, refine and spread what works – to improve more systems for more students. As we learn our way to better results, we create structures to keep the change going – and share the impact with fellow improvers! Together, we grow our impact from OUR students to ALL students.
