In my practice as an educator, I have seen the tremendous impact that facilitative mathematics teaching and deep mathematical discourse has on student learning, conceptual understanding, and overall development as critical thinkers and problem­solvers. The role of the teacher is crucial in orchestrating deep mathematical discourse that engages and guides students toward a learning goal. When a teacher takes the role as a facilitator of learning, it is essential that the educator has a deep understanding of content in order to plan worth­while tasks, strategically guide student inquiry to surface learning outcomes and address misconceptions that arise.
