Play it by Ear

Project Unpacking workshops are an in-depth exploration of structures used to design for deeper learning. Each session is facilitated by a HTH educator and focuses on one or more of the PBL Essentials. This interactive workshop invites participants to design, discuss, and reflect. Project Unpackings welcome new and experienced educators. We are thrilled to welcome 6th grade teaching team David Garcia and Nathan Ewart from High Tech Middle Mesa. They will share the story of this interdisciplinary project, Play it by Ear. The 6th grade team explored two essential questions, “What defines our limitations and how do we overcome them?” and “How do we engineer for inclusion?” by focusing on the visually impaired community and the adaptive sport of beep baseball. Students explored historical exemplars who fought for disability rights and dove into the science of sound, light, and inclusive design to create game adaptations for visually-impaired peers. The team collaborated with the So Cal Beep Baseball Association and UCSD to design and engineer working beep baseballs to provide affordable equipment for this inclusive sport. Join us to dive into design and instructional practices that will inspire deeper learning.
