During this project, fourth graders transformed into junior park rangers by creating a one-of-a-kind coloring book showcasing all the U.S. National Parks. They explored each park’s history, learning about the Indigenous peoples who lived there for generations, and then put on their scientist hats to investigate the parks’ plants, animals, and the ways math helps explain their unique features. To complete the project, students collaborated with a local caricature artist to design a coloring page that captures the essence of each park. Their finished book is now available for purchase on Amazon.
Teacher Reflection
This project was an ideal blend of writing, science, history and math while also exposing students to the beauty of our country’s national park system. I loved partnering with a local artist to help bring our coloring book pages to life and add some real-world expertise to our work. We were able to hone in on our skills of critique and revision as we took our art pages through several iterations before settling on our final designs. This project was a huge hit for me and the students! I wouldn’t change a thing.
