I’m Udeema, and I’m interning at the Natural History Museum in San Diego. So I was working in three different departments– entomology, paleontology, and education. I got to help out with the different educational programs we have here. They have in-house and outreach programs.

Some of the in-house programs are like School in the Park. They have classes. They have schools that come in, and they host classes here. There’s one about arthropods that I was helping out in. So I just got to experience a lot of these things, and I also just explore the museum for six hours. I swear, six hours is still not enough.

Actually, a lot of people were surprised by my choice of internship. Just because I’ve always been interested in engineering and math. But I wanted to try and branch out. And I love this museum, and I really want to try this and just expand my skill set and expand as a person.

Just communication between people– that is really important, especially when you’re interning somewhere. You don’t know anyone else. You have to talk to people. You have to be able to communicate and advocate for yourself. That’s a very important skill, and you have to be able to build connections with them.

Interning here, made me just appreciate just how much it takes to run a museum or run a business. And I got to see a really wide variety of it. Education is different from the science departments. It takes different people, different skill sets. But everything’s still just interconnected.
