[MUSIC PLAYING] Critique for me gives you another way to get a different perspective on what you’re doing. By having critique, you’re able to see it from another person’s eyes or like an outsider view, which is really cool because they’re ultimately going to be the people seeing it. It’s not just from your perspective.

When you’re in the work, it’s like that saying, you can’t see the picture because you’re in the frame. So when it’s your work, sometimes you can’t really see what needs to change or need to be added, so it’s important to get other feedback.

And I like how you use your voice to say juicy watermelon.

It’s helpful to have people trust and work well together how critique your work because you can take it seriously.

When I give critique to other people, they know I don’t mean it offensively. And it’s always kind, and I know that when they give critique to me, I don’t take it in a bad way, and I just know that it’s supposed to help me.

A critique comes in a lot of different forms. It comes in peer critique. It comes in one on one critique with me. It might be other adults coming into the classroom and critiquing with the students.

Before I do critique with students, I’ll give them a couple of different examples that are similar to the project that they’re working on. For example, for art, if they’re going to be doing a painting, I’ll show them a variety of different paintings from famous artists. And we’ll actually look at how that artist developed the painting. And that’s really important to do before they do their own critique with their classmates because that gives them the language that they should be using.

Critique should be positive because it’s definitely something that like art or writing, it’s something that’s personal. It’s there to say like, you did a great job on this, but maybe change this to make it better. That feels like you did something right, but there’s just something to tweak, so it helps to have something positive because it’s also like just a new angle to look at it from rather than being like start completely over and do this.
