Project-Based Learning
PBL empowers students to build essential skills by engaging in authentic, real-world experiences within and beyond the classroom.
At High Tech High we believe young people are vital community members who learn deeply by producing meaningful work that makes an impact in their community. PBL facilitates learning by having students pursue authentic questions, adopt the roles of experts or professionals, practice important skills, and develop expertise in academic content through the creation of high-quality products and shared experiences.

About the Kaleidoscope
The PBL Kaleidoscope is a visual representation of the nine essential design components of transformative deeper learning. This framework was designed by and with educators to emphasize the benefits of cycles and routines in effective teaching and learning. Just like the original idea of a kaleidoscope, we aim for teachers to be playful in sequencing these essential components to create beautiful new forms of learning.

About The Kaleidoscope
Essential questions are open-ended, relevant to academia, students’ lives, and the world beyond school. They are expressed in student-friendly language and encourage diverse thinking and further inquiry.
Essential questions can come from students or teachers, can be created at the start of a project or later in the planning processes, and can be revised and revisited. Essential questions often appear simple, but encourage multidisciplinary thinking, deep inquiry, rigorous reflection, and even differing conclusions as students explore alternative answers.
Professional Development
PBL Design Camp: Practice using the Kaleidoscope framework to design for Deeper Learning while immersed in the HTH community for three days. Be inspired by students and teachers, and learn how to create or enhance a project unit.
PBL in Action: Learn how to include strong literacy and STEAM practices into your project design. We partner with leaders in education to co-facilitate this PD to provide participants opportunities to practice instructional strategies for a PBL classroom.
HTH Project Unpacking: Start designing with a HTH teacher online for two-hours. Get hooked listening to the story of their project through the lens of Kaleidoscope framework. Join this monthly opportunity to connect with teachers and their project.
PBL Leadership Academy: The PBL Leadership Academy is a collaboration between High Tech High and the California Department of Education. Join our year-long in-person and online professional learning community for teams of California public educators to grow innovative, effective, project-based learning statewide.
